ONE BARREL AT A TIME
Stoltz Winery produces single barrel lots of Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Primitivo, exclusive blends and unique varietal wines such as Aglianico, Sagrantino, Zweigelt and others. Our wine is handcrafted, features a glass stopper format and is unfiltered.
The winery and tasting room, atop downtown Hood River, features panoramic views of the Columbia Gorge. In the oldest house in town, called “The Mansion on the Hill” (1886) is our limited production winery. Before housing the winery the house hosted the area Mortuary and town morgue for over 45 years. This unique place provides a grand stage for the production and presentation of Stoltz wines.
MORTUARY TURNED WINERY
The house was originally built by a promonent banker that developed much of early Hood River. The Victorian home was expanded to become a full service funeral home in 1922. With a steam powered body lift and cadaver laboratory as well as other parts for their operation, the coroner lived in the area above.
John has owned this wonderful Mansion since 1986. He retired from the Aerospace engineering world in 2010 and work with his son Garrit to move his winemaking into the old morgue facility. John can be seen in the tasting room providing lectures about the old building and presenting our unique wines along with their interesting stories.
Garrit grew up in the Hood River area and honed his craft making handmade wine in barrels of a manner reminiscent of old French Vignerons. He specializes in exotic varietals and small lot productions. He has spoken academically, judged at major wine competitions and was recently honored as one of the top 100 influential winemakers in the US.
